She thought she was used to it by now. The nightmares happened so often. Every night and every day, they would come to her. She just thought that after awhile, she would grow out of her fear. That she would get used to them. But there was no getting used to these dreams. No, she knew that. She just wished she didn’t.
The dreams were the same every time. Reese would come. He would warn her, remind her. ”John’s the target now, Sarah. You have to protect him!” He would comfort and hold her. It was a dream, she knew but it was still real to her. In her heart, they could still be together. But then, he would let go and lead her out. He was always just out of her reach. She would try to catch him, try to be near him but she could never get any closer. It got worse. Just like always.
The park. The kids. They were blissfully ignorant. She would shout, scream, yell but no sound would come out. They ignored her. They didn’t see her. To them, she didn’t even exist. She felt helpless and useless. Why was she here? What purpose could she possibly serve if she couldn’t even speak? Couldn’t even make a single sound? Then, there was the bright flash. That inevitable burst of white light. There’s always a brief moment before the impact and she knows. She knows they’re dead. They’re dead and they don’t even know it. The burning air comes at them like a tidal wave. She can feel the pain and she screams. She knows the children are screaming but no sound ever comes out. They’re all silently screaming for death. The blast wave hits them next and they all dissolve into nothing. Into dust and ash. They were no more. Still, she stood there. Sound finally came and she could hear her scream rise as the skin on her bones melted away. The thunderous roar from the explosion surrounded her and she could hear her voice dying away with it.
That was it. Nothing was left. No hope. No fate.
Her eyes would open and she would gasp as if holding her breath. She would try to move only to find herself shackled to her bed. No matter how hard she struggled, the restraints would not give. Defeated and alone, she would turn away from the light streaming from the window and try to forget and remember what she had dreamed.
She thought she would get used to it. After she escaped from the hospital, she thought the nightmares would end. She thought she had escaped them as well. How sad she was to be mistaken. She still dreamed and there were still nightmares every night. Sarah didn’t know when they would ever go away. Part of her knew that they wouldn’t.
All of her wished they would.

After the death of Kyle Reese, Sarah took his warnings, and the responsibility of raising the hope of mankind, to heart. She lived a semi-criminal life among various outlaws and survivalists and attempted to teach her son the skills he would need to lead the resistance.
